Being normally a rather introverted person, many people are rather surprised to find that I view life as an adventure, which is part of the reason I became a Middle School teacher (specifically a 6th grade teacher- hence, the beginning of the middle). Every single day (during the work week), I wake up knowing that I am going to have an adventure in my classroom; something inevitably will happen that was NOT planned.
Two and a half years ago, I graduated from college with my undergraduate degree and walked into a Language Arts classroom to start my teaching career... in January. The teacher I replaced had decided to retire halfway through the year. One month later, I married my husband. Needless to say, it made for a very interesting year. My first group of kiddos graduated this year and moved onto high school.
The next year, I was the only person left on my original team of teachers (all of the others retired). Getting to know three new people and learning how best to work with them was no easy task, but I quickly fell in love with my team.
This past year was a whirlwind. I finished my masters in less than one full year. Also, three months into the year, we found out our head principal was going to step down and transfer to another school. She left right before Thanksgiving... and we met our interim principal, who was amazing. Then came the snow days. 13 of them... which delayed interviews, which delayed getting our new principal. She is... everything I could ever want in a principal and so much more. Because of her, I am now going to go through the National Board process, I am the leader of a my team, and I am teaching two new contents for this next year. Also because of her, we have re-done several components of the school, including scheduling and our behavior management system.
Needless to say, I am looking forward to seeing what new adventures being a middle school teacher brings. New classroom, new content, new schedule. Let's do this!
